March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day. All the 5 Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation Centres in different parts of Malaysia had their own celebrations. Four of the Centres - National Centre, JB Centre, Kulai Centre and Melaka Centre organized a Buddy Walk as the main event for their celebration. Klang Centre had a World Down Syndrome Day Party.
Johor Baru Centre and Kulai Centre
Johor Baru Centre and Kulai Centre had a joint celebration, "Rock Your Socks" Buddy Walk. The World Down Syndrome Day Celebration was held on 11th March 2017 at Pelangi Leisure Mall. More than 300 people attended the event. This included the students of the Centre, young adults with DS from other Centres, parents and siblings of the students. Participants were encouraged to wear different socks in line with the theme "Rock Your Socks". There were more than 8 other games planned for the event. YBhg Tan Sri Shahrir Bin Abdul Sama was the guest of honour.
To celebrate World Down Syndrome Day 2017, KDSF Melaka Centre together with PSDNM, Politeknik Melaka, MBMB organized some fun activities including Buddy Walk, Bubbles Fun, Hand Print Art Project, Down Syndrome Awareness Quiz and Online Photo Contest. The event was held at the Stadium Tun Fatimah, Bukit Serindit, Melaka, Malaysia on 26th March 2017.
The National Centre also organized a Buddy Walk for the World Down Syndrome Day Celebration. Entitled "Be With Me, Walk With Me" the celebration was held on 18th March 2017. Close to 400 people attended the event; made up of students and alumni with their parents, siblings, friends and buddies. About 100 buddies and volunteers supported the event. During the Walk there are 4 different missions that the students had to complete with their buddies. Besides the Buddy Walk there was a Zumba session, Art in the Park (organized by the Parents Support Group) and Blowing Giant Bubbles.
Klang Centre held a World Down Syndrome Day party for the students on 12th March 2017 at the Centre. The activities held during the party was just as exciting as the activities at the other KDSF Centres. The students were treated to a Magic Show performed by a Clown. Twenty of the students also put on a Fashion Show. Besides the sponsored food, parents brought a lot of other food for a potluck. The highlight for the children was the cake cutting time. They all waited eagerly to blow the candles.
