This year theme is “Aim High Enough”. This is a quote by Dr John Langdon Down, whom Down syndrome is named after.  Dr John Langdon Down was physician who first describes the condition of Down syndrome. In line with the theme “Aim High Enough” we are showcasing talents of our students and individuals with Down syndrome who have made great achievements and have high aims. Our intention is to let the community realize that individuals with Down syndrome like everyone else will be able to achieve their goals and dreams with determination. We wish also to inspire our students,  their parents, first-time parents or any individuals with Down syndrome by highlighting what can be achieved if they “Aim High Enough”.

The Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation Centres in Petaling Jaya, Johore Bahru, Klang, Seremban, Melaka, Kota Kinabalu and ipoh are committed to the welfare of children with Down Syndrome. Since 1989 we have been providing the Early Intervention Programme, a Special Needs Education programme to children with Down syndrome from 0-6 years old. Our objective is to help children with Down syndrome achieve their maximum potential. Graduates from our centres have been integrated into Government schools that offer special classes for these special children. A number of our graduates are in the mainstream schools being given inclusive education.

During this WDSD we hope to create greater awareness to the public in the community of Klang that children with Down syndrome are educable from as early as 2 months old. We hope to give parents and public the opportunity to understand and familiarize themselves with the services and facilities that we offer. The three Special Needs Education Programme adopted by our Centre are the Infant Stimulation Programme (ISP) for infants, the Toddlers Programme for those age 2-4 years, and the Special Education Programme for those aged 5-6 years. These programmes are adapted from the Robert Deller’s curriculum and have been in use since the Centre first started in 1989.

“Today is an excellent example of how Kiwanis works together with corporate Malaysia to help bring the message of Down Syndrome to the public at large.” Says the Kiwanis Klang Down Syndrome Centre Chairman James Thevarasu.

We are indeed pleased to have with us our newly elected Member of Parliament for Klang YB Charles Santiago was their Guest of Honour.
