Treasure hunt to raise funds

TREASURE hunt enthusiasts can look forward to fun recreational activities and a weekend getaway when they sign up for the 24th Kiwanis Treasure Hunt 2007

Organised by the Kiwanis Club of Kuala Lumpur, the annual event will be held on May 26 and 27, taking them to Malacca this year.

Participants will be staying at the Mahkota Hotel in the historical state.

“We hope that the charity event would raise RM125,000 this year for the beneficiary, the Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation – National Centre.

“But part of the proceeds will go to the Joy Training Workshop in Malacca, Kiwanis Orphanage in Batu Pahat, Johor, and other community service projects of the Kiwanis Club of Kuala Lumpur,” event organising chairman Toh Wei Ming said.

Toh added that various activities have been organised for the event and lots of prizes await the participants.

Among the prizes are airline tickets, laptop computers and tours to China. Each participating cars will also receive goody bags and fuel subsidy.

A briefing session for the participants will be held at the centre in Taman SEA, Petaling Jaya on May 19.

Participants will be given instructions and informed of the details and format of the hunt during the briefing.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Chua Soi Lek, when announcing the event recently, also congratulated Kiwanis for their efforts and urged Malaysians to continue supporting the project.

Chua said the ratio of Down Syndrome in the country is one to every 650 births.

“This means that 770 children in Malaysia are born with Down Syndrome every year.

“Assuming that the lifespan of a person with Down Syndrome is 60 years, there would be 46,200 children and adults with the condition in the country,” he said.

He added that the figure could be larger as no study has been done on the actual situation and Down Syndrome was the leading cause of intellectual disability in the world regardless of race, nationality, religion and socio-economic status.

Also present at the launch were Kiwanis Down Syndrome National Centre patron Toh Puan Ena Ling, Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation National Centre chairman Tee Han Cheong and representaitives of the sponsors.

Among the sponsors are Dunham Bush Bhd, LBS Bina Group and Sekolah Sri Kuala Lumpur.

Petronas Dagangan Bhd is the fuel sponsor while Mahan Airlines is sponsoring the flight tickets as part of the prizes.

The Star and Sin Chew Daily are the official media for the event.

Entry closes on April 26 or on reaching 80 entries, whichever first.
