Health Problems

Children with Down Syndrome have an increased risk to the following medical conditions:
  1. Congenital heart defects
  2. Increased susceptibility to infection
  3. Respiratory problems flu, sinus, bronchitis, pneumonia
  4. Gastrointestinal disorders such as obstructed digestive tract, narrowing of the oesophagus,stomach and intestines and twisting of the bowels
  5. Childhood leukaemia
  6. Ear infection where retention of fluid in the inner ear is a very common cause of hearing and speech difficulties
  7. Hearing impairment
  8. Visual/Eye problems such as myopia,muscle imbalance, congenital cataracts, refractive errors, strabismus, nystagmus and blocked tear duct
  9. Atlanto-axial instability
